What is Studienkolleg?
Studienkolleg is an academic and language preparatory program for international applicants whose previous education does not provide direct university admission in Germany. Eligibility is not decided only by counting school years; it depends on the recognised qualification, subjects, results and intended degree field.
Preparation usually lasts two semesters and ends with the
Feststellungsprüfung (FSP). Passing the FSP gives a subject-restricted university entrance qualification for eligible undergraduate programs in the completed focus area.
🎯
Current Rule for Indian Class XII Applicants
For admissions from Winter Semester 2026/27 onward, APS India states that applicants may qualify for the subject-restricted Studienkolleg route when the Class XII certificate shows at least 70% of the maximum overall marks. This applies across examining boards; APS verification does not guarantee university admission.
Feststellungsprüfung (FSP Exam)
The FSP assesses the German language and subject knowledge connected to the selected focus course. After passing, students apply again to a university for an undergraduate subject covered by that qualification.
Examination format, grading, repeat attempts and whether an external FSP is available are controlled by the responsible state and institution. Do not assume one national attempt rule applies everywhere.
German vs English Preparation
Standard Studienkolleg route: Uni-assist states that Studienkolleg instruction is generally in German, including when the later Bachelor’s degree is taught in English. The institution sets its own accepted certificate and entry level; an Aufnahmeprüfung may test German and relevant subjects such as mathematics.
For the study-visa process in India, the current German Missions guidance requires at least B1 German for a German-language preparatory course. A Studienkolleg may require B1, B2 or another specific certificate/result for admission, so both requirements must be checked separately.
Students usually begin language preparation in India. Berlin German Academy in Surat provides German training from A1 to B2 level for applicants preparing for Studienkolleg, entrance tests and daily life in Germany.
English preparatory programs: Some private institutions offer English-medium pathways. For the Indian study-visa checklist, an English preparatory course requires at least B2 English. Before paying, verify the institution’s status, the exact qualification awarded, FSP eligibility, partner-university restrictions and which Bachelor’s programs will accept it.
Costs
- Public Studienkollegs are generally tuition-free, but students pay the institution’s current semester contribution
- Private-program fees vary widely; verify recognition, refund conditions and the complete fee before payment
- DAAD currently estimates general student living costs at about €900–€1,200 per month, depending strongly on location
- Health-insurance cost and eligibility depend on age, preparatory-course status and the selected statutory or private cover
